The highest reaction charges were found among women who used an application with a picture of themselves making eye contact and smiling. The lowest comment costs were found in men who used an app that included a picture of themselves away from the camera and no smiling.
Previous research that examined problematic apply of dating apps largely relied on self-report surveys, which can be biased and overreported. In order to address this, the present study used ecological momentary assessment ( Ema ), a technique used to collect data both in real-time and in natural settings. Recall bias and environmental validity are both addressed by Ema.
